NYVIP and OBD II

NYVIP is different than earlier vehicle emissions programs such as the NYTEST program currently used in the New York Metropolitan Area. NYTEST includes tailpipe tests of exhaust emissions as vehicles are run on a dynamometer. NYVIP is very different.

Vehicles eligible for the NYVIP emissions test will not be run on a dynamometer, and tailpipe gases will not be sampled. Since OBD II vehicles eligible for the NYVIP inspection test themselves, NYVIP is an inspection program only. We repeat, the vehicle tests itself and inspectors merely check the results of the vehicle self-tests!

Vehicles will pass or fail the emissions part of the inspection based on Malfunction Indicator Light status and on information retrieved from onboard test results stored inside the vehicle computer.
