 When Do Monitors Run?

Monitors run automatically under specific driving conditions. The only thing needed to run a monitor is a trip.

A trip is a set of driving conditions that allow the monitor to run. Generally, trips include an engine start up followed by an exact set of driving conditions that allow a monitor to run, followed by an engine shut down.

Each monitor has its own definition of a trip, and monitors will not run until those conditions are present. For example, some monitors run as soon as the engine is started. Some run only at a steady-state cruise above 55 mph. Others run after the engine is shut down.

When the monitors run is determined by the vehicle manufacturer when the vehicle computer is programmed.
