MIL Control

The vehicle computer controls the MIL. It can turn it on, and it can turn it off again.

If the computer turns on the MIL after a fault is detected, it leaves the MIL on but continues to test the vehicle. If the test that stored the DTC runs again and passes on three consecutive trips, the computer will turn the MIL OFF.

Even if the computer turns off the MIL, the DTC will not be erased from memory immediately. It will stay in memory for a while. After 40 engine warm ups, the DTC is erased if the problem doesn’t happen again.
