MIL Tests The MIL is tested each time the engine is started by a simple “bulb check” test. • When the ignition is first turned to the ON position, the MIL should illuminate to let us know the bulb is good. • When the vehicle is started, the MIL should go out if there are no emissions related faults detected. If the MIL stays on with the engine running, there should be a DTC stored in the computer. Caution: If the ignition is left ON too long before the engine is started, the MIL may go out again. This may happen in only a few seconds, so don’t miss it! When instructed to do so during an inspection, be sure the ignition is switched to the ON position. Watch carefully for the MIL to light or you may fail a car that should pass. Caution: Do not connect test equipment to the vehicle or turn the ignition to the ON position until you are prompted to do so by the inspection software. Doing so may result in false test results.
