NYVIP MESSAGE No. 9 (2006)

09/19/2006

TO: ALL NYMA INSPECTION STATIONS

FROM: NYS DEPT. OF MOTOR VEHICLES

SUBJECT: NYTEST (and all other) INSPECTION EQUIPMENT

This is a reminder to all inspection stations in the NYMA (9 downstate counties in the NYTEST/NYVIP program) that both the NYTEST and NYVIP equipment must be operational and calibrated. If the equipment is not maintained, the station could be prevented from performing any inspections until the equipment is repaired and operating. Stations are still responsible for ensuring that the NYTEST machine is operating and calibrated as required, even if they do not have a maintenance/ service contract.

DMV and DEC continue to audit stations, and are finding NYTEST units that are not maintained. The common NYTEST problems include:

  • Leak checks of the probe not conducted through the tip, only.

  • Leaks in the gas probe not repaired.

  • Calibration gas bottles expired, or not in use.

  • Printer(s) not operating properly, or not printing clearly as required.

  • Dynamometer not operating properly.

  • V Mass not operating properly.

  • Camera not aimed/missing/no tape in VCR/etc.

The NYVIP equipment is covered under warranty, and the SGS Testcom Help Desk should be contacted for repairs at 1-866-469-8477

Heavy Duty/Diesel Inspection Stations should also make sure that the Smokemeter used to perform Diesel Emissions tests is calibrated and operational.

Please remember that the inspection regulations require you to stop performing any inspections if any part of the inspection equipment is not working properly until the machine is repaired and fully functional.

These are messages sent by NYS DMV to the inspection stations via the emissions analyzer units. They frequently contain important information, usage tips, or announcements of system changes.
