NYTEST PROGRAM EXTENSION
NYVIP
MESSAGE No. 20 (2007)
04/13/2007
TO: All
NYMA INSPECTION STATIONS
FROM:
NYS DEPT. OF MOTOR VEHICLES
SUBJECT:
NYTEST INSPECTION PROGRAM
The NYTEST
emissions inspection has been an important part of the New York State
emissions inspection program since 1998. This emissions inspection
continues to test vehicles 1995 and older and vehicles over 8500
lbs., vehicles most likely to pollute. The NYTEST inspection program
remains a critical component of meeting New York State’s
responsibilities under the Clean Air Act and will remain in effect
until at least March 31, 2009. This extension is in response to the
requirements of the Clean Air Act, currently approved emissions
models in effect from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, and
as a result of determinations made by the NYS Department of
Environmental Conservation.
Although this
extension is over a year away, DMV wanted you to know as soon as
possible. Many stations are facing decisions about maintenance
contracts and other considerations, and we wanted you to be assured
that the program would continue. DMV and DEC have been working with
industry representatives to develop longer term alternatives to the
current NYTEST program. However, this work is still in the
developmental stage. Please be assured that we will notify you via an
official NYVIP/ NYTEST message when any changes occur.
In the meantime, it is
essential that all NYTEST stations continue to maintain fully
operational equipment in order to properly service the NYTEST
population.
This message is
also being sent over the NYTEST message network system.
These are messages sent by NYS DMV to the
inspection stations via the emissions analyzer units. They frequently contain important
information, usage tips, or announcements of system changes.
