Model Year 2010 Inspections

NYVIP UNIT MESSAGE No. 38

3/24/2009

TO: All INSPECTION STATIONS

FROM: NYS DEPT. OF MOTOR VEHICLES

SUBJECT: Temporary 2010 Model Year Inspection Procedure

Beginning with model year 2010 vehicles, a change has been made to the way the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is recorded and interpreted. This change will have a minor effect on the NYVIP software until the next software update.

The digit in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that denotes the model year of the vehicle is being reused. Therefore, the VIN can be decoded to either the current year or 30 years earlier (2010 could also be 1980, etc.). As some manufacturers have already begun selling 2010 model year vehicles, this will affect the model year that is printed on the Vehicle Inspection Receipt.

An upcoming NYVIP software update this summer will correct this. However, prior to the software correction, there are steps that Inspection Stations should take to correct the situation. The NYVIP analyzer will show 1980 as the model year for a 2010 vehicle. The facility should leave the Model Year (MY) as 1980 on the NYVIP analyzer. The vehicle will receive the same Safety-only inspection as if it was entered as a 2010. However, the facility should HAND WRITE the correct Model Year on the Vehicle Inspection Receipt and the Daily Report. NYVIP will print the correct VIN on all documents.

Please distribute this information to your staff. We apologize for any inconvenience.
