NYVIP Software Update

NYVIP MESSAGE No. 48

DATE:           MARCH 25, 2010

TO:                 ALL INSPECTION STATIONS

FROM:           NYS DEPT. OF MOTOR VEHICLES

SUBJECT:    SOFTWARE UPDATE

In a few days you will receive a CD in the mail from SGS Testcom. This CD will contain the latest NYVIP software update. We are pleased to provide you with this enhanced software that will now allow you to renew your facility license using the NYVIP unit and also incorporates several changes that were suggested by certified inspectors. A summary of the changes in this update is located at the bottom of this message.

We hope you like the improvements contained in this update. Please continue to submit your suggestions for improvements to the inspection process. You can do this by selecting Contractor Add On Functions in the Main Menu, and then selecting Send Feedback. Please include a contact name and phone number.

What you need to do:

When you receive the CD you should carefully follow the  instructions enclosed with the CD for updating your NYVIP unit. This software contains an update for the scan tool that will take place when you connect to the vehicle’s Data Link Connector for the first OBDII Inspection and will only take a minute.  Do not disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle until NYVIP displays the message that the inspection is complete.  Disconnecting the scan tool during the update will cause the update to fail.

Prior to installing the software, make sure that your printer is working properly.  If your printer is not working properly, you should contact Testcom for maintenance.  Do not install the software until your printer is working properly.

It is important that all NYVIP units use the same version of the software, so you must install the software immediately upon receipt. If you have not installed the software by 04/30/2010, the NYVIP unit will lockout and your station will not be able to do any inspections until the new version is loaded.

Need Help?

If you need assistance in loading the update or you haven’t received the update by 04/05/2010, contact the SGS Testcom Help Desk at 1-866-469-8477.

The following is a summary of the changes incorporated in this software update:

Reprint Receipt – Using this function, if the vehicle has been inspected on this new software, you will be able to re-print any and all inspection receipts for vehicles inspected at your station. You will have the ability to print one receipt or multiple receipts. Duplicate receipts will now also indicate three new things that had previously not appeared on duplicate receipts: 1) motorist advisory messages; 2) warning messages; 3) which wheel(s) was removed to perform a brake inspection. This information was previously available only on the original receipt. Inspections performed on the previous software version will not have this information available.

Sticker Management Menu – In selection #3 you will now have two new options, Returned Stickers to DMV (mailed, for credit) or Surrendered Stickers to Vehicle Safety (surrendered to an AFI, also for credit), in order to remove stickers from your inventory. The new selections have been added to the Sticker Inventory and End of Year Reports.

Facility License Renewal – You will now have the ability to renew your Facility License using the NYVIP Inspection Analyzer. This option is accessed by selecting #1 on the Station Menu and then selecting Renew Facility License. If you use this function, SGS Testcom will charge you a fee of $1.95. Testcom will bill the fee on your monthly usage bill.  You should carefully read the warning messages. This option will allow you to immediately renew the facility license, but you will still need to wait for the new license to be mailed to you, and that license must still be scanned into the analyzer in order to operate after the expiration date.

Trailer Makes – Additional trailer makes have been added to the analyzer software.  If you find that you inspect trailers with makes that are not on the list, please send a Feedback message with the makes that you would like added.

Trailer and Motorcycle Inspections – There have been several changes to these types of inspections.  First, when conducting a trailer or motorcycle inspection, you will notice that the screen instructions for entering the vehicle information have changed.  The application will now allow you to scan the DMV 2D barcode on the trailer or motorcycle Registration Receipt to enter the VIN, model year, make and plate number. The selection of OTHER as a trailer or motorcycle make will no longer display a warning message and no longer print the warning message on the Inspection Receipt.  When issuing an inspection certificate to a motorcycle, the wording on the screen that informs you where to affix the sticker has been changed to be the same as the Commissioner’s Regulations.

Issuing a Waiver – If a vehicle you inspect is eligible for a waiver, you will see several new screens to inform you of the requirements that must be met to properly issue the waiver.  You should read them carefully before answering the questions.

Vehicle’s Model Year – Every thirty years the model year character of the VIN number is reused. (i.e., the character for model year 2010 is also used for model year 1980). This can cause some confusion. When manually entering a vehicle model year, the NYVIP unit will offer you the choice of the two possible years (i.e., 2010, 1980). If you use the DMV Registration barcode to enter the vehicle information, it will read the correct model year from the barcode.

Printer Lockout – The NYVIP software will now check to see if there are any unprinted documents and will lock out the analyzer until all are printed.  Some stations have continued to perform inspections without a working printer, in violation of the regulations and potentially causing problems for the customer. Remember, your printer is warranted and will be repaired or replaced at no charge to you as long as the malfunction is only due to normal wear and tear.  Abuse is not covered.  Please contact the Testcom Help Desk at 1-866-469-8477 if you have any equipment problems.

Brakes Inspected – For Light Duty Vehicles Only, a front wheel must be pulled to check brakes, and you must indicate which wheel was removed. If you cannot pull a front wheel, there is a selection for “Unable to remove a wheel”, which will fail the vehicle at the end of the inspection. You will be given an opportunity to change this entry and indicate that a wheel was pulled.

License Plate Entry – The instructions on this screen regarding dealer vehicles has been changed. They now read “If this is a dealer vehicle press CTRL D”.

(Press the “Ctrl” key and the “D” key at the same time.)

Station Performance Report – We have added this new report which shows inspection statistics such as how many of each type of inspection is passed or failed by each inspector.  Also on this report are waivers and 10-Day Extensions that have been issued by each inspector. The new report is located by going to the Station Menu, select Management Reports and select Station Performance Report.

Daily Report – The Detail Report will now print as the Daily Report.  There will no longer be a Detail Report selection.
