Trailer inspections and the consumer weight change, warning message

In conducting a trailer inspection the information must be entered manually (by keyboard)
into the NYVIP unit, as trailer registrations do not contain a scanable bar code. When
entering the information manually the program defaults to a weight code 1 (0-8500 lbs.).
Many trailer inspections require this entry to be changed to a 2 (8501-10000 lbs.),
3 (10001-18000 lbs.) or 4 (18000+ lbs.). When this change is made the screen will display
a warning message to the inspector, to which he must answer, “yes” for the NYVIP
program to display the appropriate safety items for the trailer being inspected. The
weight change also causes a message to be printed on the inspection receipt informing
the motorist that DMV records pertaining to the weight of their trailer may be incorrect,
when this is not the case. The inspector should inform the consumer to disregard this message.
The next software release will contain a correction that will eliminate the warning screen to
the inspector and the motorist message that is printed on the inspection receipt.

These are messages sent by NYS DMV to the inspection stations via the emissions analyzer units. They frequently contain important information, usage tips, or announcements of system changes.
