How To REDUCE Service Calls!

The following instructions were designed to provide you with information that will save you time in performing an inspection and help prevent equipment failure.

Turning NYVIP Off or Re-booting.

            1. Under normal operating procedures you should turn your NYVIP unit off by

using the “Shutdown” option on the Main Menu.

            2. Properly turning NYVIP off overnight or periodically will not harm the unit.

3. In unusual situations such as your NYVIP unit locks-up or you press escape at

the time of issuing an inspection certificate, you should turn the NYVIP unit off

by pressing in the power button on the front of the computer for 5-6 seconds.

4. You should never turn NYVIP off by disconnecting the power cable from the

wall outlet or by usig the switch on the power strip.

NYVIP Component Checks

During start-up and periodically during operation of the NYVIP unit, the software

performs “System Ready Checks” on the Bar Code Scanner, Scan Tool, Floppy

Disk/Drive and the Modem. If a component fails except for the Modem the

NYVIP unit will lock out from conducting inspections. Help messages are

provided under the option of “Online Help” on the Computer Base Training and

Test Menu. You can print the suggested items to check. If the list indicates that

cables and their connections be checked follow the listed procedure below.

1.      Properly turn the NYVIP unit off.

2.      Disconnect and reconnect any cables related to the failing component. Make sure all connections are secure. Never, disconnect and reconnect cables while the NYVIP unit is powered up.

3.      Restart the NYVIP unit.

4.      If the problem still exists, contact the Help Desk at 866-469-8477.

At times the Computer in the cabinet of the cart may move closer to the door of the cabinet due to movement of the unit or handling. When this happens the Floppy Disk eject button may come in contact with the cabinet door and cause the Floppy Disk to eject. This will causethe NYVIP unit to lock out from doing inspections. Open the cabinet door and re-insert the Floppy Disk. A formatted Floppy Diskette must be properly installed in the Floppy Drive at all times. If you lock out due to a Floppy Disk error and the disk is properly installed in the Floppy Drive, contact the Help Desk at 866-469-8477.

Cable Handling

Never, kink or stretch any of the cables on the NYVIP unit. Kinking or stretching

cables shortens their life, as it places stress on the connectors or results in failing

            of the internal wires.

Screen Directions

Every screen has directions to properly proceed with the inspection. Reading the

directions during operation will save you time. It will also prevent you from

performing a function that could interrupt your ability to perform inspections,

such as indicating you have no inspection certificates in inventory when you do.

In most situations if you press the wrong key the system will display a message

that will allow you to correct your mistake. If you do not understand the message

before you press any other keys on the keyboard contact the Help Desk at 866-

469-8477.

Inspection Certificate Issuance

Inspection Certificates are issued by the NYVIP unit in accordance with the

Commissioner’s Regulations. NYVIP will display the appropriate certificate

number and type for the inspection performed. Tat is the certificate that you need

to scan to assign it to the vehicle. If you scan a different number or type you will

cause the inspection process to take longer and possibly waste good inspection

certificates. If the inspection certificate will not scan you can press “M” and enter

the certificate number by manual entry using the keyboard.

NYVIP Communication with the Vehicle

When conducting the OBDII test portion of the inspection, there maybe times

where you connect the NYVIP Connector to the vehicle’s Data Link Connector

(DLC) and NYVIP displays a message that reads “Link Not Established with the

Vehicle”. When you follow the directions on the screen and answer the question,

another screen will appear with five options to choose from. If you choose option

number 1, you are indicating that the NYVIP Connector on your inspection

analyzer is broken or missing. Making this selection will lock out your NYVIP

unit from conducting any further inspections. Option number 1 should not be

selected unless there is a problem with the connector on the NYVIP unit. If this is

the case you need to call the Help Desk and open a service call.

Printer Cartridge Set-up

Cartridge set-up is important for good quality printouts. When setting up the

NYVIP unit you should conduct the cartridge set-up and alignment at that time.

You will also need to do the set-up when you install new printer cartridges.

NYVIP Phone Line

This phone line is a dedicated phone line to be used by the NYVIP unit only.

There should not be any other devices connected to the NYVIP phone line. If you

experience communication problems when performing inspections you should

first check the following.

1.      Disconnect the phone line from NYVIP and plug it into a

telephone. Listen for a dial tone.

2.      Make a call and listen for excessive static on the line.

3.      Inspect the phone cord for kinks or breaks. If possible swap the phone cord with another one.

4.      Check the phone jack connector for loose or broken contacts.

5.      The Contractor may ask you to contact your phone company to check the line for data transmission or outages in your area.

Waivers

It is the responsibility of the repair shop to keep the Waiver form that is printed on

the NYVIP along with the appropriate repair or parts invoices. If you want to give

the customer a copy of the Waiver form, when the NYVIP unit displays the

screen that reads “Do you wish to print a second copy of the receipt”? you must

select “Yes”. If you answer this question with “No” you will be unable to get

another copy of the Waiver form.

These are messages sent by NYS DMV to the inspection stations via the emissions analyzer units. They frequently contain important information, usage tips, or announcements of system changes.
